Mt. Tabor

Mt. Tabor is an icon of Southeast Portland, with its crown jewel being Mt. Tabor Park.  Boasting outstanding views of Downtown Portland, an abundance of walking and biking trails, and a man-made reservoir, it is one of the Eastside’s most sought-after areas.  Mt. Tabor itself is famous for being an inactive volcano!

Mt. Tabor was once heavily wooded and filled with game until a massive fire cleared the land in 1846.  This opened up an opportunity to farmers and Mt. Tabor quickly became known for its orchards.  Some of the old trees are still producing fruit in the backyards of a lucky few residents.  Now, Mt. Tabor is primarily filled with residential homes, and some of Portland’s most stately to boast.  With big beautiful architecture and down-to-earth neighbors, Mt. Tabor is truly a special community. There is also a nice blend of historic houses of all shapes and sizes, usually found on quiet, tucked-away streets.  Just at the base of Mt. Tabor you will find all the fun that Hawthorne and Belmont have to offer.   It is also worth mentioning that people flock to Mt. Tabor for its renowned award-winning schools.

The neighborhood of Mt. Tabor “proper” extends roughly from 49th to the west to 76th to the east and between Burnside and Division.  This makes Mt. Tabor the ideal location for commuters of all types.  Not far from three major freeways, public transportation and bike lanes abound.

South Tabor borders the park on its south side and is made up of a mix of tidy bungalows and post-war mid-century style homes.  The neighborhood encircles the impressive campus of Franklin High School where neighbors come to play tennis, bike, shoot hoops, run the track, or join a pick-up soccer game.  South Tabor is known for its population of “urban farmers” and boasts a yearly harvest festival where people come together to exchange goods and share their garden’s bounty.  South Tabor is a more affordable option than Mt. Tabor proper, but with the same great schools and proximity to the park and neighboring business districts.

North Tabor is on the lower north side of the park and also borders Montavilla.  Near the MAX and Tri-met, this location is especially great for anyone who commutes downtown.  The neighborhood is a mix of homes big and small, some of which have great and expansive views.  There are also a good number of classic mid-century style side-by-side duplexes in this area.  These quality duplexes are highly sought after by the investor and owner occupant alike.
